SINGAPORE – For the second year in a row, Singapore’s Changi Airport has been voted the World’s Best Airport by air travelers.
At the Skytrax 2014 World Airport Awards in Barcelona, Spain last Wednesday, Changi Airport enjoyed double success, also receiving the top award for Best Airport for Leisure Amenities.
“Winning this prestigious award for the second year in a row, Changi Airport Singapore is showing itself to be much more than an airport,” Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, said at the awards ceremony.
“Changi Airport offers a travel experience in itself and continues to develop its quality standards to be named the world’s favorite airport again. Changi Airport is a well-known leader and innovator for the airport industry and genuinely delights and surprises travelers who are lucky enough to enjoy the airport facilities,” he continued.
In Barcelona to receive the reward on Changi’s behalf at the Passenger Terminal EXPO , Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of Changi Airport, was visibly humbled by Changi’s recognition.
“We are honored to be named Skytrax World’s Best Airport for the second consecutive year. We appreciate the support given to us by travelers from around the world. This recognition is a great motivation for us and spurs us to continue to aim higher. At Changi Airport, we remain steadfast in anticipating the needs of our customers, which is the cornerstone of the Changi experience. We share this honor with our airport community, for their unyielding commitment to service excellence and with our passengers, for their vote of confidence.”
Featuring an orchid garden, movie theater, gym and rooftop swimming pool, Changi’s top ranking come as no surprise to passengers familiar with the airport.
“Changi Airport demonstrates how to make the airport experience an enjoyable part of the journey that is so important in today’s fast-moving world,” Skytrax CEO Plaisted said.
Last year, Singapore’s government announced the planned construction of an fifth terminal that will nearly double the airport’s capacity, and maintain its competitive edge as a regional hub.
Currently, Changi’s three terminals are visited by an average 66 million passengers each year, and construction on a fourth terminal with the capacity to handle an additional 16 million passengers per year is ongoing and set to be completed in 2017.
The independent awards from Skytrax are based upon 12.85 million votes from frequent travelers of 110 nationalities. Other airports recognized on the World’s Best Airports 2014 ranking included:
